Revelation 20 is the most solemn chapter in the book.
It holds the binding of Satan, the reign of the saints, the loosing and final defeat of the enemy, and then — the great white throne, where every soul that has ever lived stands before God, and the books are opened.
It is weighty. But for those who belong to Christ, even this chapter is steadied by one quiet, unshakable thing: a book of life, with their name written in it.
The Dragon Bound
Revelation 20:2
"And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,"
The dragon — that old serpent, the deceiver from the very beginning — is laid hold of, and bound.
For all his terror through the whole book, watch how easily he is taken. One angel. A chain. A key. He is bound.
The enemy has always been on a leash, and here the leash becomes a chain. He was never the equal of God. He is a created, defeated thing, and his time is running out.
The First Resurrection
Revelation 20:6
"Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years."
There is a "first resurrection" — and those who share in it are called blessed and holy.
And here is the line to hold onto: "on such the second death hath no power."
For those who are in Christ, the worst that the end can do has already lost its grip. There is a death that cannot touch you. There is a dying that has no power over the one who is risen with the Lamb.
You may face the first death, as all do. But the second death — the real and final one — has no claim on a soul that belongs to Christ.
The Great White Throne
Revelation 20:11
"And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them."
And then the most awesome scene in all of Scripture.
A great white throne. And the One seated on it is so holy that earth and heaven themselves flee from His face.
Everything that ever seemed solid — mountains, oceans, stars, the whole created order — runs from His presence. Only what is eternal can stand here.
This is the moment every soul will finally reckon with: alone, before the throne, with nowhere left to hide and nothing left to lean on but what is true.
The Books Were Opened
Revelation 20:12
"And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works."
Books are opened — the record of every life, every deed, small and great.
But then "another book" is opened: the book of life.
And this is the difference between dread and peace at the great white throne. Not whether your record is spotless — none of ours is — but whether your name is written in the Lamb's book of life.
The saints are not saved at this throne by a perfect record. They are saved by a written name — a name placed there by the blood of the Lamb, before the foundation of the world.
The Second Death
Revelation 20:14–15
"And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire."
Even death itself dies here. Death and hell are cast into the lake of fire.
For the redeemed, this is unspeakably good news: the last enemy is finally destroyed. Death is no more.
And the one question that decides everything is simply this — was your name found written in the book of life?
That is why the gospel is so urgent, and so tender. God does not want a single name missing. The book is open. The Lamb's blood has already paid for your name to be there. There is still time to make sure it is written.
A Gentle Word for the Reader
Revelation 20 is solemn, and it should be. The throne is real. The books are real. The choice is real.
But do not read it with terror if you belong to Christ. The dragon is bound and finished. The second death has no power over you. And your name — placed in the book of life by the Lamb's own blood — is the one thing that will hold when earth and heaven flee away.
If you are not sure your name is there, this is the gentlest and most important invitation you will ever receive: come to the Lamb. Let Him write you in. The book is still open.
Reflection Questions
- The dragon, so terrifying through the whole book, is bound by a single angel with a chain. How does it change your fear of evil to remember that the enemy is a defeated, created thing on God's leash?
- "On such the second death hath no power." What does it mean to you that, in Christ, the final death has no claim on your soul?
- At the great white throne, what matters is whether your name is in the book of life. Are you resting in a written name rather than a perfect record — and is there anyone you long to see written in that book?
Short Prayer
Lord, one day earth and heaven will flee from Your face, and every soul will stand before Your throne.
Thank You that I do not have to stand there on the strength of my own record, but on a name written in the Lamb's book of life.
Write me there. Keep me there. Let the second death have no power over me.
And put on my heart the names of those I long to see written too — for the book is still open, and You are not willing that any should be lost.
Amen.
