John 7:38 — Rivers of Living Water From Within

It was the last and greatest day of the feast, when priests poured out water before the altar in a ceremony of longing — a prayer for rain, for life, for the refreshing of God.

And into that moment, Jesus stood and cried out with an offer that went far beyond a ceremony: not only water to drink, but a spring that would rise up within and flow out in rivers.

Out of the Innermost Being

John 7:38

"He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water."

The old translation says "out of his belly" — but the meaning is the innermost being, the deepest centre of a person, the hidden core of the soul.

And what flows from there, Jesus says, is not a trickle but "rivers of living water." Not a small private comfort, but an overflowing abundance, alive and moving, pouring out of the deepest place.

This is a breathtaking promise. Most of us think of the spiritual life as something we have to keep going out to find — to fetch from sermons, books, other people, like carrying water from a distant well. But Jesus speaks of a source that rises from within, so that we are no longer only seeking water, but carrying a river inside us.

From Vessel to Source

Notice the movement. Earlier, Jesus offered Himself as water to drink. Here, He goes further: the one who has drunk becomes a fountain. We begin as empty vessels coming to be filled — and we become springs from which living water flows out to others.

This is the pattern of the indwelling life. Christ comes to dwell within by His Spirit, and where He dwells, He does not stay still or stagnant. He flows. He overflows. The life He gives is not a private possession to be hoarded but a river meant to run through us and out into a thirsty world.

The next verse tells us plainly that Jesus spoke this "of the Spirit." It is the Holy Spirit, given to those who believe, who becomes this inner river — Christ's own life welling up and pouring out from the centre of who we are.

Living Water, Not Stagnant

The word "living" matters. In Scripture, living water is moving water — a flowing stream, not a still pond. Stagnant water grows stale; flowing water stays fresh.

So the inner life Christ gives is meant to move. It stays fresh precisely as it flows — as we let it pour out in love, in service, in encouragement, in prayer for others. The river is kept clean by running. The more it flows out, the more it flows in.

A soul that only takes in and never pours out becomes a stagnant pond. But a soul that lets Christ's life flow through it to others becomes what Jesus promised: a channel of rivers.

A Gentle Word for the Reader

If you feel spiritually dry — always running out to find a little water somewhere, then running dry again — John 7:38 offers you something deeper than another external source.

Christ wants to be a spring within you, not a well you must keep travelling to. Through His Spirit, He comes to dwell in your innermost being, and from there His living water rises — enough to satisfy you, and enough to overflow to others.

So stop only carrying water from the outside. Turn to the One who dwells within, and let His river rise in you. And do not be afraid to let it flow out — in kindness, in words of life, in love poured toward the thirsty around you. The more you give it away, the fresher and fuller it runs. You were not made to be a stagnant pond. In Christ, you were made to carry rivers.

Reflection Questions

  1. Jesus offers a spring within rather than a well you must keep travelling to. Where have you been seeking spiritual life mostly from outside yourself?
  2. The believer moves from vessel to source — from being filled to overflowing. Who in your life is thirsty for the living water Christ wants to flow through you?
  3. Living water stays fresh by flowing. How might letting Christ's life pour out of you actually keep your own soul from going stagnant?

Short Prayer

Lord Jesus, You promised not only water to drink, but rivers of living water flowing from within.

Forgive me for always running out to find a little life, when You long to be a spring inside me.

By Your Spirit, rise up in my innermost being, and let Your river flow — enough to fill me, and enough to overflow.

Make me a channel, not a stagnant pond. Let Your living water run through me to every thirsty soul You bring near.

Amen.
