On the last night before the cross, with His friends afraid and heartbroken, Jesus gave them — and us — one of the most intimate promises in all of Scripture.
He had spoken of leaving them. Now He revealed how He would never truly leave: by coming, with the Father, to make His home inside the one who loves Him.
We Will Make Our Abode With Him
John 14:23
"Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him."
This is the heart of the whole "Christ within you" life, spoken by Christ Himself.
"We will come unto him, and make our abode with him." The word for "abode" means a dwelling, a home, a place to stay. It is the same word Jesus used moments earlier when He spoke of the many rooms in His Father's house. And here He turns it around: not only will we have a home in heaven with God — God will make His home in us.
Stop and let the weight of that settle. The infinite God, Father and Son, by the Spirit, chooses to take up residence in the human heart. Not to visit occasionally. To abide. To stay. To make His home there.
The Doorway of Love
And notice the gentle condition: "If a man love me, he will keep my words." The doorway into this indwelling is not achievement or perfection. It is love — a love that shows itself by keeping His words, by treasuring what He says, by a life turned gladly toward Him.
This is not a love we must work up by ourselves; it is a love kindled by His love for us. We love Him because He first loved us. And as that love grows, it opens the door wider and wider for Him to make His home in us.
The keeping of His words is not a price we pay to earn His presence. It is the shape that love naturally takes — and the open window through which His indwelling life pours in.
A Home, Not a Visit
There is a world of difference between a guest and a resident. A guest comes for a while and leaves. A resident lives there, knows every room, is at home in the place.
Jesus does not promise to visit you now and then. He promises to make His abode with you — to move in, to dwell, to stay. Your heart is not a place He passes through. It is a place He calls home.
This means you are never alone in the deepest sense. Wherever you go, whatever you face, the Father and the Son have made their home within you. The Presence you long for is not far off in heaven. It is nearer than your own breath, dwelling in the centre of who you are.
A Gentle Word for the Reader
If you have longed to feel close to God — if your prayers have sometimes felt like calling out to Someone far away — John 14:23 turns the whole picture around.
God is not distant, waiting for you to reach Him. If you love Christ and keep His words, the Father and the Son have already come and made their home within you. You do not have to summon a faraway God. You have only to turn inward, in quiet love, to the One who already dwells there.
This is the secret the whole Christ-within life rests upon: not striving to reach a distant heaven, but waking up to the nearness of the God who has made His abode in you. Love Him. Keep His words. And know, in the deepest place, that you are His home now — and He is yours.
Reflection Questions
- Jesus promises not to visit but to "make his abode" — to move in and stay. How does it change your sense of God's presence to know He dwells in you, not far from you?
- The doorway is love that keeps His words. How might a deepening love for Christ open you more fully to His indwelling?
- The Presence you long for is nearer than your breath. What would it look like to turn inward to the God who already makes His home in you?
Short Prayer
Lord Jesus, You did not promise to visit me, but to make Your home in me — You and the Father, by Your Spirit, dwelling within.
Kindle in me a love that keeps Your words, and open every room of my heart to You.
When I feel You are far, remind me that You are nearer than my breath, already at home in the centre of who I am.
Make Your abode in me, Lord. I am Your dwelling place. Be at home in me.
Amen.
